Small Conservation Garden

This garden is a in a conservation area and required special treatment. A new house, the property was built using an approved brick to fit with the prevailing limestone used throughout the village. The builder had installed a mean patio and path across the back of the house using the plainest of paving slabs.

Although cheap and uninteresting, the plain paving slabs fitted well with the character of the area, so this was extended to make it more useable. The two circles, one of lawn and a smaller one of paving, create an implied line diagonally across the garden thereby visually pushing out the corners and making the garden appear larger. The smaller circle and the mowing strip around the lawn is constructed with a concrete paver called 'Blanc de Bierges' - a material which weathers down to look similar to the local limestone.

The factory roof to the south of the property is rather unfortunate and required some screening. This was achieved by adding a golden acacia - Robinia pseudoacacia "Frisia" - and an arbour close to the house. For many years Mr Palmer had cultivated a glory vine - Vitis coignetiae - against the south east corner of the house but it was proving to be too large for the position and becoming very unpopular with Mrs Palmer. From my point of view this was perfect as it could be trained across the arbour to help screen the factory.

The garden was constructed in 1990 and is still growing strong. Some changes in the planting have been required over the years but the essential essence of the garden is still there.
